in October 2023, police say that Vincent Hemphill is accused of beating three men with a shovel, one of whom, 81-year-old Clinton resident Charles Short, died from his injuries months later in January.

Short's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, and on Thursday, the Metropolitan Police Department was notified that the death was determined to be from complications of blunt force trauma, and the manner was ruled a homicide.

Hemphill, 62, was initially charged with assault with the intent to kill, though now the department says that officials are working with the US Attorney's Office to get the charges against him upgraded following the results of the autopsy.
